What started in France as a fundraising initiative in 2005 by baker Pierre Hermé blossomed into a worldwide event with bake shops, tea houses, and restaurants in the United States, France, Belgium, and even Japan hosting one to three-day events centered on the macaron. Throughout these countries and others, bakers offer free samplings of macarons, with a portion of sales, in many cases going to charity.
